An Unforgettable Seabird Watching Experience in Sagres

After leaving Porto da Baleeira and heading out to sea, we can glimpse the vast marine fauna that exists on the slopes of Sagres along the entire coast.

In this area, nesting sites predominate for local and migratory birds that travel to southern Europe. The period when sightings are most abundant due to migrations is in the months of September and October.

Among the species that can be sighted are the Common Gannet (Morus bassanus), the Cory’s Shearwater (Calonectris borealis), the Balearic Shearwater (Puffinus mauretanicus), the Lesser Black-backed Gull (Larus fuscus), and the Common Tinamou (Catharacta skua). From May to October, the small and mischievous Storm Petrels (Strom petrel) are sighted.

In October we find the Black Shearwater (Ardenna Grisea), Audouin’s Gull (Larus Audouinnii) and the Arctic Skua (Stercorarius Pomarinus). Wandering among the waves of the sea, we also see the Eurasian Pied Shearwater (Hydrobates pelagicus), the Common Shearwater (Ardenna gravis) and the Common Shearwater (Oceanites oceanicus), the latter being more frequently sighted in August and September.

On days with conditions considered perfect, we can observe Sabine’s gull (Xema sabini) or the long-tailed skua (Stercorarius longicaudus).
During the tour, it is possible to use bait to attract the birds so that they can be observed up close, as well as to navigate calmly, making stops to study the animals’ behavior.

It is worth noting that it is quite common to encounter other marine animals, such as dolphins and whales, during these expeditions.

Come and discover the wonders off the coast of Vila do Bispo.
